Waltzing Matilda

Der Text wurde 1895 vom Dichter Andrew "Banjo" Barten Paterson (1864-1941) geschrieben ud von Christina MacOherson vertont.

Waltzing Matilda ist das wahrscheinlich beliebteste Volkslied Australiens und für eine kurze Zeit zusammen mit Advancer Australia Fair als Nationalhymne anerkannt. Bei den Olympischen Spilene 1976 in Montreal wurde es sogar alleine als Nationalhymne verwendet. 1977 wurde dann in eienr Abstimmung die heutige Nationalhymne als alleinige bestimmt.

1. Once a jolly swagman
camped by a billabong / Under
the shade of a coolibah tree, /
And he sang as he watched and
waited till his billy boiled, /
"You´ll come a-waltzing Matilda with me!"

Waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda, /
"You´ll come a-waltzing Matilda with me!"
And he sang as he watched ...

2. Oh, up came a jumbuck and
he drank at the billabong, / Up
jumped the swagman and he
grabbed him with glee, / And he
sang as shoved that jumbuck in
his tucker bag, / "You´ll come
a-waltzing Matilda with me!"

3. Well up came the squatter
and he´s mounted on his
thoroughbred, / Up came the
troopers, one, two, three. /
"Where´s that jolly jumbuck
you´ve got in your tucker bag?" /
"You´ll come a-waltzing Matilda
with me!"

4. Up jumped the swagman
and lept into the billabong, /
"You´ll never catch me alive!"
said he. / And his ghost may be
heard as you pass by that billabong, /
"You´ll come a-waltzing
Matilda with me!"

1. Ein fröhlicher Buschläufer lagerte
einst an einem Billabong (Altwasserarm)
im Schatten eines Collibah-Baums.
Und er sang während er den Kessel betrachtete
und darauf wartete das sein Teekessel kocht:

2. Da kam ein Schaf zum Billabong
und begann aus dem Billabong zu trinken.
Der Buschläufer sprang auf und

3. Da ritt der Farmer auf

das hübsche Schaf,
das du in deinem Vorratsbeutel hast?"

4. Der Buschläufer sprang auf
und stürtzte sich in den Billabong.
"Ihr bekommt mich nicht lebend!"
rief er. Und seinen Geist kann man
hören, wenn maqn an diesem Billabong
vorbei kommt:
"Geh mit mir auf die Waltz!"
